February 2009- Andes Survivors
Expedition - Price $3450
|
|
Visit the site of the most famous survival story in
the late 20th century (popularized in the movie ALIVE!)
in the company of one of its protagonists and guide
Ricardo Peña. Eduardo Strauch, one of the famous
16 Andes Survivors will join us in this unforgettable
trip.
An incredible valley in the middle of the majestic Andes.
The site is reached using 4x4 vehicles to a post from
where we ride horses to our high camp. Next day we ride
horses all the way up to the memorial site where the
remains of the airplane are. All of this in the company
of Eduardo Strauch who will share with us many of his
personal impressions of their historic ordeal. A
unique opportunity!
Since this trip is done in the middle of the Summer
(February in the southern hemisphere) access is remarkably
straight forward. Clients are not required to have any
mountaineering experience. Participants can choose to
either:
- Hike the whole distance between the vehicle
drop off point and the Valley of Tears, and back (about
16 miles each way and 5000 vertical feet gain)
- Hike some of the distance (whatever distance
desired) and ride horses.
- Or simply ride horses all the way to the Valley
and back. This being the least physically demanding
choice, all it requires is to ride horses for 2-4
hours a day for the 4 days we are on the mountains.
Our expedition also offers full support for your comfort.
Horses carry all of our gear so you do not have to carry
a heavy backpack at any time. We provide tents for sleeping
and dining, cooks to prepare our food, horse handlers,
and guides and assistants to help you with anything
you may
need: from translations and setting up tents for you,
to packing and answering any questions. (Read our Frequently
Asked Questions PDF for more information).
This trip will include plenty of Argentinean culture,
from the Gauchos and horses in the mountains, to the
very "European" and picturesque towns of Mendoza
and San Rafael. Options include a mountaineering exploration
of the area (for experienced climbers) on our return
from the site.
